Meta Quest Ready Assets - Fire Extinguishers

Whilst working at Lampada Digital Solutions I worked on a project to develop a VR application for the then Oculus Quest (now Meta Quest Platform). The main purpose of the app was to train users about Fire Extinguishers and how each one corresponds to each type of fire. This project (being on a mobile platform) needed well optimised assets made using low poly modelling techniques. The main asset was the fire extinguishers, of which there were 4 different types. 3 of these needed IK hoses so that the user could pick up the nozzle of the extinguisher and move it around in the virtual environment.

The application used a lot of particle systems which meant we needed to save on performance in other areas as much as possible. This put restrictions on the asset creation process and meant that I needed to keep materials to a minimum whilst still creating a realistic looking fire extinguisher.

Modelling

The main modelling was done based on reference images of the 4 different types of fire extinguishers and working from there to create a good representation. The aim was to reduce the polygons in each extinguisher as much as possible whilst still having a model that lit well in Unity and had realistic textures.

Each model has a total triangle count of between 1,500-2,000 for the entire model with almost 50% of the triangle count being the hose in order to ensure proper deformation when skinning the mesh.

Texturing

The texturing for the fire extinguishers was a combination of substance painter with some designs I made in Illustrator. I recreated the graphics of the fire extinguishers from scratch in Adobe Illustrator from reference photos that I captured during our site visit. After spending time creating the graphic I would then take this into Substance Painter and use the masking features to add some weathering in order to fully blend the design into the model. The materials used on the rest of the extinguisher were metal presets from Substance painter adjusted with some weathering to make the extinguisher seem old and worn.
